Even though Spring starts in March I can see how in Scotland we don’t really see a change until a bit later, probably around May. This month has seen me awakening from the lethargic Winter months and I can say I have definitely taken advantage of the longer days.
At the beginning of the month I attended an incredible conference, organised by the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh, about Black Holes. Professor Fabio Biancalana, who works in the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Science *I know!* gave a two hour talk about universe, space and time.
I was a bit afraid when I booked the tickets as my understanding of these matters is definitely not at “professor” level but I am happy to report that I enjoyed the event hugely and I was able to follow around 80% of his dissertation *girl boss moment here*
As if one genius was not enough for May, my husband and I also went to the always stunning Usher Hall where we enjoyed a concert tribute to Tom Jobim. Even if his name is not familiar you, I am sure his songs are, as he is one of the big bossa-nova and jazz composers with a huge legacy that includes Ipanema’s girl *olha que coisa mais linda…*
May has been a great month to meet friends and organise dinner parties, such as the Second Degrees dinner or entertaining some friends in our own home. We have also indulged with some great meals out, such as the sumptuous breakfast at The Lookout or our weekend lunch at The Grand Café.
I feel I have to mention the great dinner we had a Hendersons, the best vegetarian restaurant in Edinburgh which is also a long time institution. They celebrated their birthday at the end of May and we booked a table to enjoy not only some classics from the menu but also the live music as well as birthday cake!
Just when I realized what a wonderful month full of joy and happiness; the last week brought the icing on the cake. We traveled to Paris to meet my sister and brother in law and it was my mum’s birthday. She is 58 years young and she loved the flowers that we sent from Edinburgh. After all, May is for blooming, at all levels!
